Upside down to allow butter to come to room temperature.

I love Kilner products and have many of their jars. I was nicely surprised when my butter dishes arrived because they keep the butter cooler than the ones we had. There is space for larger blocks of butter. They have good weight, my hands are weak and I can pick up the top with one hand. I also use one turned upside down with the bottom as the lid to keep my butter in whilst coming up to room temperature overnight. My only problem is keeping it full!
